Earnest "Ernie" Woods Sr.

Earnest Woods, born February 16, 1945, to Russell and Minnie Woods, passed away, December 29,2024 in Emory, Texas. His funeral service will be January 03, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. At Emory Methodist Church, in Emory, Texas. A Visitation will be held the same day at 9:30 A.M, at Emory Methodist Church. Interment will be at a later date at Evergreen Memorial Garden Cemetery in Mahtomedi, Minnesota. 

Earnest "Ernie" Woods' remarkable journey began on a family farm in Wheeler, Wisconsin, where he was welcomed as one of 23 children born to Russell and Minnie (Gardner) Woods. From his earliest days, Ernie demonstrated the exceptional work ethic and generous spirit that would define his life, helping not only on his family's farm but also lending a hand to neighboring farmers.

 At age 20, Ernie embarked on a new chapter in St. Paul, Minnesota, where destiny led him to meet his soulmate, Delores "Dee" Larson in 1967. Their love story blossomed swiftly, and they married just six weeks later, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span 57 years.

 Called to serve his country during the Vietnam Conflict, Ernie distinguished himself in the U.S. Army, earning the Purple Heart for his courage under fire, along with a marksman's medal and other commendations. Following his honorable discharge in May 1969, he built a sterling 33-year career at 3M in St. Paul, where his versatility and dedication shone through his roles as machine operator, lab technician, and van driver. A proud veteran, Ernie devoted himself to serving his fellow service members through leadership positions in the Military Order of the Purple Heart, rising to the ranks of chapter commander, district commander, and state commander. His commitment to veterans extended through his active membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and American Legion.

 In 2005, Ernie and Dee began a new adventure on Lake Fork, Texas, where he embraced the warm climate and outdoor life. An accomplished outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting and fishing. Ernie could often be found in the town of Emory picking up a doodad and spending lots of time talking to people. He always had a story to tell and strangers to meet. His gift for friendship turned strangers into friends through his warm conversation and memorable stories. Ernie's servant heart found a special place at Emory Methodist Church, where he delighted in driving for the afterschool kids club, often surprising the children with treats and creative costumes that brought smiles to countless young faces.

His greatest joy was his family, including his cherished wife Dee, favorite daughter Dawn. He is preceded in death by his son, Ernie, Jr., his parents, his 17 sisters, and 5 brothers and other family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and friendship that will be carried forward by his wife, daughter, numerous nephews and nieces, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.

He was a proud member of the MOPH-Military order of the Purple Heart; American Legion;  DAV-Disable American Veterans.
