Steven Joe Jones, born on July 7, 1963, in Liberal, Kansas, to biological parents Robert Merrell Sr. and Bebe Hargrove, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his loved ones and the community. He peacefully departed from this world on September 17, 2023, in Tyler, Texas, with his devoted wife and mother by his side.
He was adopted by Earl and LaNeita Jones at birth. In his later years, he developed a relationship with his biological father. His biological mother Bebe was always in his life.
Joe's career in the oil field and later as a welder showcased his commitment to hard work. He approached every task with skill, leaving a lasting impact on those who worked alongside him.
Beyond his professional life, Joe immersed himself in various hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. A true aficionado of World of Warcraft, he delighted in exploring its fantastical realms. However, it was his passion for nature that truly captivated him. He was a rockhound and nature photographer. Joe possessed a green thumb and took great pride in nurturing his Texas Star Hibiscus plants. His knowledge and enthusiasm for these vibrant flowers were evident along with all other plants and flowers.
Joe's personality was one of laughter and enjoying the little things. He never shied away from voicing his political opinions; frequently reaching out to congressmen and women to express his thoughts.
Outside of his work and hobbies, Joe cherished meaningful connections with family and friends. Inquisitive by nature, he loved expanding his knowledge base through watching documentaries while finding joy during fishing trips. Music was a large part of his life, often attending concerts to listen to a variety of artists with friends and family.
Relaxing on the front porch provided Joe with the opportunity to engage in heartfelt conversations with visitors who were drawn to his warmth and genuine interest in their lives. Dogs held a special place in Joe's heart as he found solace in their loyal companionship. Throughout his life, he always had a faithful four-legged companion by his side.
Joe will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his beloved wife, June Jones, who stood by him through thick and thin. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his mother, Bebe Hargrove, and his cherished son, Leland Bird. Additionally, Joe leaves behind stepdaughters Kaye Ross and Debra Jenkins, and stepsons David Griggs and wife Star, Ricky Griggs and wife Mona, Randy Griggs and wife Lorie, and Rick Collins
Among Joe's surviving family are brothers Robert Merrell Jr., Kevin Larson, and partner Keith Roddy, Bobby Short, and stepbrother Dan Langston. His legacy will carry on through his twenty-two grandchildren as well as a multitude of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Joe was greeted in Heaven by his wife Judy Jones, adoptive parents, Lanita and Earl Jones, his stepmom Pat Jones, Step son-in-law Richard Jenkins, and his biological dad Robert Merrell Sr.
The family would like to let everyone know that there will be a Celebration of Life for Joe held on October 22 at 2:00 P.M. at the Rose Community Center in Emory. The address is 239 Quitman St. Emory, Tx 75440.
In mourning Joe's loss, let us take comfort in the precious memories he gifted us with. May we find solace in the knowledge that his spirit will forever guide and inspire us. As we celebrate his life, let us remember the remarkable man he was - a diligent worker, a passionate hobbyist, a vocal advocate for change, a loving family man, and a true friend. Though Joe may no longer walk among us physically, his memory will forever remain etched in our hearts.
