Merle Edwin Hutchings, born on March 9, 1941, to Joe Bailey Hutchings and Wylie Elizabeth Barnes, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. He was a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to serving others and has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
A retired paramedic with the Dallas Fire Department, Merle exemplified leadership, kindness, and compassion throughout his career. As one of the first paramedics in the department, he approached his work with a sense of purpose and commitment, tirelessly helping those in need. His involvement in the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) through the Fill the Boot campaign showcased his dedication to charitable causes, yet he never sought recognition for his acts of generosity.
Merle was a man of many passions, with a love for the outdoors that was evident in his hobbies. He cherished fishing trips in Canada and hunting excursions in Colorado, moments that brought him joy and peace. His fondness for his cattle was a testament to his deep appreciation for the land and the life it offered him. He was also an Army Veteran.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Merle often said "Merle is Just Merle." His humility, strength, and the warmth he brought to his relationships will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Moore; brother, Jerry Hutchings; nephews and nieces, James Smith, Donald Hutchings, Sydney Hutchings, Dennis Moore, Clarence “Tinker” Moore, Annette Hardey, Tracy Butler and numerous other family and friends.
Merle is preceded in death by his parents, Joe Bailey Hutchings and Wylie Elizabeth Barnes; siblings, Joe Hutchings, Marilee Hudman, Tommy Hutchings, Donald Hutchings, Alan Hutchings and Steve Hutchings.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Merle Edwin Hutchings will take place at H & H Farms nursery in Emory on Saturday, March 1st from 1:00 to 3:00.
Merle’s legacy of compassion, service, and love will continue to inspire those left behind. He will be greatly missed, but his spirit lives on in the memories shared by family, friends, and colleagues.
